The spirit of the piece is in the stone and my job is
to release it.
To be an affluent mbira player requires one to have
been possessed by the musical spirits of ones ancestors
which usually happens when villages host it's own family
of musicians who when possessed by their ancestral spirits belt out this joyful music of
Africa. The sound
of the mbira can now be heard fused with western music.
These musicians play this handmade mbira, or nail thumb
piano, placed in a calubash surrounded by pop bottle
tops
to enhance the vibration of the sound which they use
to create lyrical tunes. This music festive is usually
organised to appease spirits or to celebrate good harvests
.
